About America Reads – NCCU
North Carolina Central University has continued its collaboration with the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill with the NC Literacy Corps program called SCALE. NCCU uses the model of the America Reads program initiative with its AmeriCorps members serving as Coordinators for the program. The Coordinators recruit, orientate and train work-study and volunteer students who serve as tutors; provide placement in 6 Durham Public Schools (Burton, CC Spaulding, Eastway, Fayetteville Street, RN Harris and WG Pearson elementary schools.) The Coordinators also ensure that pre- and post- Bader testing is completed for each child that is tutored in an effort to understand the level of reading and to increase each child reading skill. The statistics show that students need to reach grade level with reading by 3rd grade in order to have success as a student. Scores of NCCU volunteers and work-study students go out to the neighboring schools each week to read and tutor kindergarten through third grade students. The students have a huge impact in the life of the student that they help to achieve this reading goal.
